The other day, I called a gentleman who had opted into my site and requested more information about my home business. I listened to him tell me about his goals, the things he was looking for in a business and the numerous other sites he had checked out.
“I have two questions for you, JT.” he said, somewhat guarded.
“Fire away.” I told him.
“Why don’t you show pictures of you and your cars and your house and stuff like that? All these other guys have pictures of cars, boats, mansions and jets and stuff.”
I paused, and gave him the most honest answer I know how to give to that question. “Well, does it matter what my cars and my house and my stuff look like?” Does it really matter to you that I have an awesome life? If I was like one of those other guys with their rented sports cars who are hanging out in someone else’s house for their little photo shoot, would you be more apt to join my business?”
“I guess not.” he said.
“Exactly,” I responded. “What is your second question?”
“How much do you make?” His voice was somewhat forced; almost like he was afraid to ask the question, but wanted to come off as though he was boldly asking, like it mattered.
“How much do you want to make? “ I responded.
Silence. “Well, I guess…look, I’m just wondering…”
“You are wondering what is possible. You want to know if this is real, and so you think by asking what I make, it will give some indication as to what you might make, right?”
“Right.”
Look, if this conversation sounds familiar to you, or if you have asked these questions yourself, I understand. It is totally normal. But for crying out loud, cut it out.
Who cares what one person makes? Are you so scared that you have to know what the guy on the other end of the phone is making to ‘assure’ yourself of success? Are you one of those yo-yos that “only wants to work with the top-earner” in any given company?
Awesome. Good for you. I’d love to have you on my team. But consider this; I have lots of people on my team that are just getting started that are just as qualified to serve you and assist you in achieving your goals.
What if you aligned yourself with a new person? What if that person was so driven, so dedicated to their business, that they actually taught you something? What if they actually assisted you in meeting your goals, and became a great business partner and mentor?
Don’t believe the hype from these wannabes in their rented Ferraris and the borrowed plush executive homes. It’s a load of BS. Most guys with the nice cars don’t show them off because they allow their leadership to sell themselves.
I love nice cars and big houses just like everyone else. But I am not going to make a business decision based on somebody else’s ‘stuff’.
Test-drive the person, not their car. Lounge around in their brain for a while, not by their pool. Don’t get enticed but the ‘bright, shiny objects’.
Look for substance: how do they train you? What is the percentage of their direct team that is positioned at the highest level of the business? How active are they in the company? Do they actually use the company’s products?
Here’s one: IS THIS BUSINESS THE ONLY HOME BUSINESS YOU ARE INVOLVED IN?
I’ll get into that one later. That topic pisses me off a bit, so don’t read my next post unless you are ready to listen to me spew!
Bottom line is this: If you are going to invest your money and your time in a home business, then make sure you align with a company of integrity that provides outstanding support and training and backs itself with world-class products.
